Roderick Smith travels up and down the
western United States painting en plein air, finding vistas that catch
his eye and call to his spirit of adventure as an artist. His paintings
are alive with movement, his rich color saturated palette a joyous
experience for the viewer. Roderick says he feels as if he is in a
special "portal" of time and place while he is painting. It is as if his
brush just moves in reaction to his exhilaration of painting the moment
before him.
Roderick has a BFA from Rochester Institute of Technology, worked in
commercial art for three years, and has studied painting in New York at
the Art Students League and at the National Academy of Design. His
desire to travel to paint other cultures and places led him to San
Miguel de Allende in Mexico where he studied portraiture, and spent time
painting. He loves painting the natural beauty of California's beaches
and finds that special "portal" of time and place painting the missions
of California. For Roderick, every day is a new opportunity to seek out
the living moment waiting to give life to his canvass.
